Cheddar Fried Egg and Ham Sandwich

I’m a sucker for a good sandwich. Make that an egg sandwich and I am a happy, happy woman. This cheddar fried egg and ham sandwich isn’t anything too fancy. It is just good eating!

Fried Egg and Ham Sandwich

There are a few things that make your sandwich good.

  • Get the bread right. I love a slightly toasted bread (think: toasted on one side and just a touch softer on one side). But some sandwiches call for a soft, pillowy bread. This recipe needs a toasted bread. I recommend sourdough or whole wheat!
  • Sauce!!! You need some sauce. Mayo, ketchup, olive oil, etc. For this one I used mayo!
  • Vegetables and Lettuce. Every great sandwich has one or both of these. Like I’ll give grilled cheese a pass BUT that is all. My pro tip? Season the vegetables. I always salt and pepper my veggies and people rave about my sandwiches!

Note that I didn’t touch on the main ingredient in the sandwich which would be the primary filling (meat, egg, tofu, etc). I think most people do fine with picking a good main but it’s all the other stuff that is a let down. Don’t let me down 🙁 .

Fried Egg and Ham Sandwich

For my main on this sandwich I did cheddar fried eggs which is just a fancy shamncy way of saying I fried some eggs and halfway through their frying I threw on a couple heaps of sharp cheddar cheese and let it get all crispy and caramelized on the edges and gooey in the center. Longest sentence ever? Perhaps… but I’m sure we’ll all survive. I also added some deli ham slices because I think ham&cheddar is a classic combo and I wanted to give this sandwich some more heft. Any other deli meat would work.

People are always rambling after the like new “one neat trick” version for making eggs (scrambled, sunny, what have you…) and like Ima be real with you. You get better at making eggs by making them a lot! That’s it. That’s the trick. So go buy 2 dozen eggs and have an egg sandwich everyday for 1-2 weeks and by the end of it you will be a master!

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread I like sourdough or whole wheat
  • 1 Tablespoon mayo
  • 1 medium tomato
  • 4-5 Leaves Romaine Lettuce washed and thoroughly dried
  • 2 Large Eggs and a bit of oil to cook them
  • seasoning for eggs I use Vegeta (Note 1)
  • 1-2 Ounces Sharp* Cheddar Cheese *As far as I'm concerned, no other cheddar cheese exists!
  • 4-8 Slices Thin cut deli ham

Instructions

  1. Toast your bread. Spread mayo, tomatoes on one side. Layer the lettuce on the other. Put the ham slices on the lettuce.

  2. Get a nonstick skillet and add a bit of oil or spray oil. Get the skillet warm and crack your eggs in, season 'em, and cook them until the whites are starting to firm up then layer the cheese on top. Continue cooking until edges are crispy and caramelized and the cheese is melted.

  3. Layer the cheddar fried eggs onto the ham. Bring those happy pieces of bread to each other and EAT!!! Enjoy 🙂

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Vegeta is an all purpose vegetable seasoning sold in Ethnic supermarkets. You can use it to season anything but I love it on eggs.

Well, that’s all folks! Happy Cooking and Eating!
